I tried something new this month 🪣✨

To my surprise it took less than five minutes.

Hello worm friend!

Maybe you have been curious about what else your worm bin can do. Maybe you have heard terms thrown around and wondered what they actually mean. Maybe you have never thought about it at all.

Either way, this month I tried something new. And it was easier than I expected.

What is vermicompost extract

Vermicompost extract is a liquid natural soil amendment made by soaking worm castings in water. That is the short version. The slightly longer version is that when castings meet water, the beneficial microbes and nutrients in the castings transfer into the liquid. You end up with something you can spray directly onto your plants and soil.

It is not a fertilizer. It is a way of delivering what your soil already needs in a form plants can absorb quickly.

The moment that stopped me

Everything I used: compost bag, water, sprayer and vermicompost.
I filled a compost bag with worm castings, dunked it into a water in and out about 30 times in about 2 minutes. A few minutes later I had extract ready to spray.
The castings bag going into the water. This is the whole process.
I was expecting it to feel like labor. It did not. The whole process took just a few minutes.

I sprayed it on some trees and now I am watching. I am in the experiment phase. I do not have a before and after yet. What I do know is that vermicompost extract is linked to stronger root development, improved soil biology, and better plant resilience. The soil is doing something. I just have to be patient enough to watch.

Your bin can do this too

If you have worm castings, you are closer to this than you think. A mesh bag, a bucket of water, and a few minutes. That is the whole process.

Have you ever tried vermicompost extract on your plants? Hit reply and tell me. I want to know.

Until next time,
